Robert Mahoney Bio

Robert M. Mahoney is Vice Chairman of Citizens Financial Group. He is responsible for New England Banking, which includes oversight of Citizens’ state banks in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Connecticut. Mahoney oversees several additional business lines, including Citizens Investment Services Corp., and Dealer Finance, and Communications and Publishing.

Mahoney joined Citizens in 1993 as President and CEO of Citizens Bank of Massachusetts after serving 22 years in various domestic and international commercial banking positions with Bank of Boston. During his five years as CBM President, Mahoney led the new bank through significant expansion, growing it to a $6 billion financial services institution with more than 100 branches and 1,200 employees. Prior to his current post, he was responsible for all Risk Management across the holding company.

Mahoney holds several community leadership positions in Massachusetts. He is a Trustee of the University of Massachusetts and is Chairman of the University’s Development Committee. He is a Trustee of Catholic Charities and serves on the organization’s Development Committee and is a member of the United Way Executive Committee and Board of Directors. Mahoney is also a member of the board of directors of Greenwich Capital and the Boston Main Streets Foundation.

Mahoney received his MBA from Columbia Business School in 1971. He is a 1970 graduate of the University of Massachusetts, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. He received the 1996 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Massachusetts.
